Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) at the Damietta LNG Plant

SGS Egypt has been awarded the Non Destructive Testing (NDT) contract for Train I of the new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant in Damietta, considered as one of the world’s largest LNG Plants.

The Damietta LNG Plant is owned by Spanish Egyptian Gas Co. (SEGAS) - a joint venture between the Spanish “Union Fenosa” and the Italian “ENI”.

SEGAS is investing $1 billion for the construction of its LNG plant being built in Damietta, that will have capacity to process 7.6 billion cubic meters (268.4 billion cu ft) of gas per year, producing about 4.8 million tones of LNG when it starts up at the end of 2004.

The main contractor is Damietta LNG Construction LlC. (DLC) – a subsidiary of the British “M. W. Kellogg Limited (MWKL)”, a long-time client of SGS.

SGS Egypt is fully complying with all local legislations and rules, and applying a Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 9000 series, specific to the project.

We have set-up a site office (port-cabins) at the plant premises and mobilized our technical and administrative staff, as well as equipment dedicated to this project.

By operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, SGS Egypt has successfully maintained a level of production of almost 1500 welded joints weekly and has developed a unique system for database and archiving for traceability purposes.

Typical NDT operations performed onsite include:

  • Radiography Testing (RT) using X-ray & gamma-ray.
  • Ultra Sonics Testing (UT) for thickness measurements, corrosion survey & for detection and determination of flaws and discontinuities.
  • Surface crack detection:
    • By magnetic particles (MT)
    • By eddy current
    • By dye penetrate (PT)
