The storage of dangerous goods in tanks involves risk to the population, the environment, and the surrounding area and must therefore be executed safely. In order to reduce economic and environmental risks, periodic inspections of the tank condition, and in particular the tank bottom and shells, is of outmost importance to prevent disasters from happening.
SGS Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) has the experience, the accreditations and up–to-date equipment to carry out expert controls, inspections and measurements to ensure business security and safety, for both existing and new installations. SGS NDT gives a clear insight into the risk of leakage and other safety critical defects; this increases the integrity and safety within the installation and in turn prevents unnecessary operating expenses.
SGS provides a cradle to grave package whereby our involvement starts at the tank design to the management of the inspection data. SGS takes care of the complete tank turnaround where it comes to integrity and reliability services.
Our Services for Storage Tanks include but are not limited to the following:
- Design Verification and Mechanical Integrity Studies
- Project Management and Supervision of Construction
- Tank Calibration
- Periodic External and Internal Inspection as per API 653 and EEMUA 159
- Consulting & Supervision of Repair and Certification
- Data Hosting and Asset Integrity Management
In terms of Non-Destructive Testing Services for Storage Tanks our services focus on the following two areas:
- Tank Bottom Inspection
For the inspection of tank bottoms, SGS offers a quick and reliable inspection by combining two techniques: Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT). By using these two techniques, corrosion is detected effectively (MFL) and quantified reliably (UT).
- Tank Shell Inspection
To assess the wall thickness of tank shells accurately, SGS uses a rugged remote access ultrasonic crawler - a piece of equipment designed to cost-effectively take ultrasound thickness measurements on above ground ferro-magnetic structures, without the need for costly scaffolding or rope access.
These inspection services are completed by Asset Integrity Management Services providing clients with clear line of sight for all inspection, reporting and asset integrity management activities.
The benefits of Asset Integrity Management are:
- On going development and management of Inspection and reporting systems
- Closed-loop, integrated and evergreen system for continuous improvement
- Reducing costs through the control of the inspection and maintenance budgets
- Maintaining a fully auditable and compliant system
- Integration of inspection assessments with any existing software platform
- Planning, coordination and execution of focused inspection and reporting activities meeting all compliance needs
- Continued safe and profitable operations (Risk Management)
- Strong focus on inspector support when capturing field data
SGS operates a wide variety of NDT and inspection services. The above only listed a small selection. SGS will fully execute all needs for compliance with local and global regulation. Based on the integrity assessment additional inspections can be scheduled or specific location will be marked for future monitoring.
